Edgar Allan Poe
Objective:
Students will read and analyze one of the works by Edgar Allan Poe that is provided above, make connections to Poe's tumultuous life, and finally write a 4 page analysis. Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.+
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
Introduction:
Upon reading one of the pieces of writing by Poe and completing the assignment, answer questions about theme, symbolism, and the nature of the characters in Poe’s writing. How do these works compare and contrast? Why do you think Poe chooses to write this way? What kind of gothic elements are there in his work?
The Task:
- Pick one work by Poe: “The Fall of The House of Usher”, “The Tell Tale Heart,” “The Black Cat” “The Masque of Red Death” “Hop Frog
- Read about Poe’s life from the Glog
- Make a connection between Poe’s life in correlation with is writing.
- Analyze with a four page paper.
The Process:
Pick one story (The Fall of The House of Usher”, “The Tell Tale Heart,” “The Black Cat”, “The Masque of Red Death”, “Hop Frog”) by Edgar Allen Poe and read it. Along with picking and reading one of the stories listed, the students are also expected to read information about Poe and make connections in correlation to each other. Students are then expected to write a four page analysis one the specific work vs. Poe’s background.
